Every standard opens at 150 in your selected currency. That is a placeholder, not a market rate — set each one to the price you can actually achieve.

For reference, biochar carbon removal broadly transacts in the range of 100 to 200 per tonne CO₂. AlliedOffsets put the market average near 140 in January 2026. Puro.earth publishes the only transaction-derived index we are aware of, its CORCCHAR biochar index, at €129.21 in July 2026.

Isometric, Rainbow, Global Biochar C-Sink and Verra VM0044 do not publish credit prices; their credits are sold through private agreements. Figures published by those registries are certification and issuance fees, which are a cost to the producer rather than a price to the buyer. We have deliberately not assigned an estimated price to any standard, because a made-up number in this field would rank the standards against each other on an invented basis.

Benchmarks as reported August 2026 and not verified by Fusinite. Prices move; treat them as orientation, not as a quotation.

How much of a tonne of biomass ends up as permanent CO₂

Feedstock efficiency, independent of batch size. Read it as: for every tonne of dry biomass put through the kiln, this much CO₂ is permanently stored under each standard — and that tonnage as a percentage of the biomass mass.

Where the number comes from. Dry biomass becomes dry biochar at the modelled yield. Of that biochar, C_org is organic carbon, and each standard credits a fraction of it as permanent. Carbon becomes CO₂ at 44/12. Nothing here depends on how much you ship.

Methodological basis and limitations

Methodological basis and limitations, versions checked 5 August 2026. Gross permanent CO₂ storage is estimated as dry biochar mass × organic carbon fraction × the applicable methodology-specific permanence or persistence factor × 44/12. Isometric Biochar Storage in Soil Environments v1.2 applies either its 200-year H/Corg and soil-temperature decay model, capped at 95%, or its 1,000-year random-reflectance and non-reactive-carbon pathway. This calculator uses the supplied gross inert fraction and does not apply Isometric’s required one-standard-deviation deductions. Rainbow Biochar Application to Soils v2.3 applies a temperature-banded H/Corg model for 100-year storage and the fraction of residual organic carbon with Ro ≥2% for 1,000-year storage. Puro.earth Biochar Methodology, Edition 2025 v2, applies its CORC200+ persistence model using H/Corg and regional soil temperature. Global Biochar C-Sink Standard v3.3 assigns a 75% geologically persistent carbon fraction to qualifying biochar with H/Corg ≤0.40 and 90% only when all upper-class analytical and representativeness requirements, including Ro ≥3.8% and/or HyPy-resistant carbon ≥90%, are satisfied. Verra VM0044 v1.2 applies a 100-year persistence factor based primarily on production temperature, subject to H/Corg and other methodology requirements. Results are comparative gross estimates based on entered values and selected published permanence equations. Unless expressly shown, they exclude sample variance, standard-deviation deductions, analytical and methodological uncertainty, conservative adjustments, buffers, reversal risk, project and lifecycle emissions, leakage, baseline and additionality requirements, eligible feedstock and end-use restrictions, sampling and batch-representativeness requirements, monitoring, verification and registry-specific deductions or withholdings.
